Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2009-05120_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: KTH, Royal Institute of Technology. Funded amount: SEK 2,712,500, as stated by the source. Runs 2010-01-01 to 2012-12-31. Keywords: Oklassificerat, Unclassified. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-04); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: This proposal addresses fundamental questions and properties of silicon quantum dots such as: How does a silicon quantum dot look like? Why does it emit light? Does shape influence optical properties - just as size? Why do some of them blink? Are elongated quantum dots - quantum rods - stronger light emitters? Is multi-exciton emission possible? Can 100 % quantum efficiency be reached boosting applications? Our experimental approach is based on spectroscopy of single, lithographically defined silicon quantum dots - a unique method developed by our group where we, together with our collaboration partner in Prague, are world leading. The method makes it also possible to correlate individual quantum dot spectra to AFM size measurements and to TEM structural images. In the project we will specifically make thin membrane supported quantum dots to enable such correlations. We will also initiate a new effort for mass fabrication of silicon nanocrystals/quantum dots to provide a future route to applications. The groups scientific expertise in this field is manifested by a series av publications, invited talks and summer school lectures. Our group is also part of a Linné centre in "Advanced Optics and Photonics". The budget provides support for a new PhD student, for clean room processing and for collaboration.
