Project funded by Swedish Research Council (Project grant), grant 2017-03836_VR. Participating organisations named by the source: Karlstad University. Funded amount: SEK 3,200,000, as stated by the source. Runs 2018-01-01 to 2021-12-31. Keywords: Naturvetenskap, Natural Sciences, Fysik, Physical Sciences, Subatomär fysik, Subatomic Physics. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-12-05); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Topological phases of matter exhibit exotic phenomena which may lead to new technologies in the future, notably in quantum information and quantum computing. A major theoretical tool in their study is topological quantum field theory. The project aims at making profound advances in topological quantum field theory and in related areas, and at exploiting these to solve problems about topological phases. The specific topics to be studied include effects resulting from domain walls between different phases and constructions based on a new type of symmetry structure. The planned research combines methods and concepts from quantum field theory and condensed matter physics as well as from diverse areas of modern mathematics, including novel mathematical tools that will be developed within the project.Several specific tasks will be pursued in parallel, starting with those amenable to already existing methods and successively proceeding to more demanding problems. Preparations will start during 2017 in connection with ongoing work. First publishable results are expected already for 2018, while other issues, in particular concerning systems with fundamental fermionic degrees of freedom, will be explored only later on.The resulting progress in topological quantum field theory will be of intrinsic theoretical interest and admit spin-offs in different areas of mathematics and physics. Significant contributions to the rapidly evolving field of topological phases are expected as well.
