Project funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. (FCT) (FCT_CPCA_2022_01), grant 2023.09537.CPCA.A1. Funded amount: EUR 1,307.02, as stated by the source. Runs 2023-07-01 to 2023-12-31. Keywords: Near term quantum algorithms, Noisy quantum simulations, Time and space efficient noise aware quantum simulators, Engineering and technology. Source: OpenAIRE Graph, from the funder's project data (collected by OpenAIRE on 2025-07-19); national funding data, not CORDIS. Abstract given by the source: Algorithmic research for Noisy Intermediate State Quantum (NISQ) computers focuses on hybrid quantum/classical iterative approaches, which allow for shallow quantum circuits. These algorithms are developed and assessed on classical simulators of quantum resources. These simulations, however, seldom consider noise, although their motivation arises from real systems being noisy! The circuits' shallowness is taken as a guarantee of noise robustness. The team behind this proposal researches NISQ-aware algorithms for several applications, including machine learning, integration, and optimization. Results show that many recently proposed NISQ-aware hybrid algorithms aren't effective when executed in the presence of noise. This project aims to develop NISQ-aware algorithms robust to noise. These will be developed and assessed using classical simulators of quantum systems that include realistic noise models. However, such simulations of noisy systems are computationally very demanding, both in time and space. High-performance computers are required to soften time requirements and run such workloads in useful time up to a reasonable accuracy level. Simulation of quantum systems is also exponential on memory, with current simulators limited to a few dozen qubits. This project includes developing highly parallel space-efficient simulators, based on recasting simulation as a sum of paths, allowing evaluation of the newly proposed algorithms up to hundreds of qubits.
