KPI Sens 1: Market readiness
KPI observatory / Quantum Sensing and Metrology
Publicly known product, service or use-case classes based on quantum sensors that European companies develop, implement and sell, or that are deployed in the EU.
Official values: survey results of the Quantum Flagship Strategic Advisory Board, as published. Trajectory and live measure: calculations of this portal, not the assessment of the SAB.
Official values
| Year | Value (definition page 15) | Scorecard (page 5) |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 3 | 3 |
| 2022 | 5 | 5 |
| 2023 | 6 | 6 |
| 2024 | 8 | 8 |
| Progression per year | +2 | |
| 2030 target | 20 | 20 |

Remarks and method
The booklet gives no remark for this indicator.
Method as stated: Product classes named in the booklet (reference Sensing and Metrology 1).
Trajectory (calculated by the portal)
product or service classes
On pace only if growth compounds
On pace only if growth compounds: recent pace 2021-2024: (8 - 3) / 3 = 1.7 a year; needed pace to 2030: (20 - 8) / 6 = 2 a year; compound growth: recent +38.7%, needed +16.5% a year. Portal calculation, not the SAB assessment.
At the recent linear pace the value would be about 18 in 2030.
The booklet rates each indicator on its own four-level scale (ahead of schedule, on schedule, needs progress, behind schedule); that assessment is not reproduced here.

Live measure of the portal
A proxy calculated by the portal from its own data; it is not the official value and measures something related, not the same thing.
Sensing technology families with confirmed organisations
4 of 5 families Sensing families with at least one confirmed organisation
| Atomic and optical clocks | 7 confirmed organisations |
|---|---|
| Quantum magnetometers | 0 confirmed organisations |
| Quantum gravimeters and inertial sensors | 7 confirmed organisations |
| Quantum imaging | 9 confirmed organisations |
| Colour-centre sensors | 1 confirmed organisations |
Data as of 2026-11-04. Assembled on 2026-11-04.
How it is calculated
Families of the sensing pillar of the shared quantum technology taxonomy with at least one organisation whose classification is confirmed.
Coverage: The taxonomy index of the portal: organisations classified by source fields, keyword rules or editors.
Limitations:
- Technology families, not product classes, and organisations, not products sold: at most as many as the families the taxonomy defines.
- The index has no history, so there is no yearly series.
